How Unspoken Words Affect Our Well-being

So often, clients come to me with throat issues – sore throats, lumps in the throat, even energy blockages in this area. It’s a common sign that something is holding them back, often stemming from unresolved emotions and communication challenges. When we aren’t fully expressing ourselves, the energy in our throat chakra can become blocked, resulting in discomfort and dis-ease in this area. If left unaddressed, these issues can affect our overall well-being, creating tension not just in the throat, but throughout the body and mind.

The Effects of Unexpressed Emotions on Health

When we hold back our emotions – whether it’s due to work boundaries, family dynamics, or simply not feeling safe to express ourselves – these feelings don’t disappear. They can manifest physically, creating discomfort in the throat and contributing to chronic issues like sore throats, frequent laryngitis, or even feelings of a "lump" in the throat. Psychologically, unexpressed emotions can lead to frustration, increased stress, and eventually, a feeling of being “stuck” or unheard. As a result, our emotional and physical health both suffer.

Releasing Emotions Safely

Now, let’s be real: expressing pent-up emotions in every situation isn't always appropriate. Ranting at a colleague or telling a family member how we truly feel might bring more harm than good. The key is to find a safe way to release these emotions before they erupt at the wrong time, on the wrong person, or both!

Here are some practical, therapeutic ways to process these feelings without causing friction:

  1. Journaling – Use a notebook to let it all out! Journaling can be a powerful way to “speak” freely without worrying about grammar, spelling, or judgment. Just let your thoughts flow and allow yourself to say what you truly feel. If you’re not sure where to start, try these prompts:

    • What am I holding back, and why?

    • Who or what am I struggling to communicate with?

    • What do I truly need to say for my own peace of mind?

  2. Writing a Letter – Another approach is to write a letter to the person (or situation) you’re struggling with. Remember, you don’t have to send it; simply writing down what you want to say can bring a tremendous sense of relief. This technique allows you to “speak” your truth without confrontation, and you might find that, in the process, you gain clarity about how you truly feel.

Meditating on the Throat Chakra

The throat chakra, or Vishuddha, is associated with our ability to communicate effectively, express ourselves honestly, and stay true to our inner truth. When energy flows freely through the throat chakra, we find it easier to express ourselves, set boundaries, and speak with authenticity.

One way to unblock this energy centre is through a colour meditation focused on the throat chakra’s blue hue:

Concentrate on the colour blue, the representative colour of the throat chakra. Breathe deeply and imagine a gentle blue light surrounding you. As you inhale, visualise this blue light entering your body through your throat, clearing any blockages. As you exhale, release any fear or hesitation around self-expression.”

This meditation is a gentle yet powerful way to visualise and release any tension in the throat area, allowing you to communicate with more ease, confidence, and clarity.

When we make space to release emotions and clear blockages, we invite a healthier, more harmonious relationship with ourselves and others. Taking these small steps, like journaling or practising meditation, can make a significant difference in how we show up in our lives, fostering a sense of calm and ease within.
